New OLEDs Expected to be in the Market for Next Year

It really blew me away when I saw how incredibly thin these new TV screens are. You’re looking at Sony’s brand new Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) screens. The middle screen, on the photo above, measures 27 inches across, whereas the others measure about 11 inches across.

Sony will begin mass-producing the next generation displays using this technology. To date, manufacturers have used OLEDs for screens inside phones and MP3 players, but consumers may be able to purchase this new technology on TVs by 2008… the price? Well, I don’t expect it to be cheap.

CNET said about the product:

“Materials in an OLED display emit light when an electrical current is applied. Because of their luminescent nature, OLED displays don't require a backlight, consume less power and can result in thinner screens than LCDs, currently favored in the flat-panel industry”.

Sony is seriously focusing in the technology and, according to the company, is better than Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs). Other companies have experimented with this new technology, like Toshiba for example: they’ve developed a 17-inch OLED display, but so far Sony has beaten its competitor by demonstrating a 27-inch OLED display, which was created by seamlessly combining several small OLED displays together… smart technique, don’t you think?
