Philip Johnson’s Glass House has opened its doors to the public for the first time ever last month. Mr. Johnson died in January 2005, and after his death, the house passed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and wasn’t available for public visit until now.
Starting April 30th and throughout June, will be preview months, until the formal inaugural gala picnic, which will be held on June 23rd of 2007.
The Glass House was built in 1949 and, ever since then, it has been an important representation of modern international style. It is located in Connecticut on Johnson’s 47 acre estate and behind a big stone wall, making it difficult to see from almost any point.
According to the Philip Johnson’s Glass House Website, tours will run annually from April to October, ranging from a 90-minute tour at $25 per person, to a guided personal tour by a curator at $500 per person… well, at least it includes a picnic lunch.
