From The Music Department: Great Tracks With Great Music Videos

Franz Ferdinand - 'Take Me Out'
A very catchy song from a famous Indie (yes, they’re Indie) Scottish band, with a very artistic video. Why? Well, a couple of the band members were art students.
I absolutely love the part when the beat slows down, just before the main riff comes in.

The Bravery - 'Honest Mistake'
It's funny. I have mentioned this Indie band countless times but have never posted anything in their honor. This is one of The Chief Pompomist top favorite tracks. Don't skip the video! The concept behind it is an interesting domino rally. It's creative, dark, mysterious... too bad they missed the target at the end.

Royksopp - 'Eple'
This Norwegian duo have become some of the top masters of ambient electropop music of all times. Eple, which means apple in English, is an all instrumental track... and sort of the 'Ikea' of music: the sound is simple yet perfectly combined to build something that makes you say "...yeah, that sound cool!".
The clever video is a sequence of real family photos. Genius!

A Human Flipbook

Restaurant franchise Erbert & Gerbert's came up with this innovative idea of advertising the business. Is a human flipbook using 150 t-shirts.

It must have taken a long time to shoot.

Traffic Of Clouds

The Traffic of Clouds is a large scale site installation developed by Hackenbroich Architects in collaboration with Jan Christensen. The project will be exhibited between September 13th and October 21st, 2007 in Germany.
The project took about 8 months to build between the artist and the architects. The architects created the space and the artist created the wonderful graffiti paintings on the walls and ceiling, which deepens the space of the room.
This big wave of wood accommodates various activities like an outdoor park, a patio or living rooms were anyone can sit back and relax.

During exhibition hours, Wi-Fi is available, so the site is a fun place for anyone who wants to use it as an office.

Canned Bread!

Yep, you read that right! Now the Japanese are selling canned bread on vending machines. It is funny that the bread comes in that can-shape.

Chapel Of St. Quirin

The beautiful chapel of St. Quirin is the oldest in Luxembourg. It was built into a rock back in 1355, but the roof and bell towers were added in the 19th Century. The chapel has two entrances: through the front door, as seen on the photos, or a tunnel located in a secluded area to the rear.

May I Have Your ID?

Last Friday, right after work, I passed by the supermarket to buy some groceries. Among the items, I had a bottle of wine and a pack of Killian’s in the cart. I was going to have some friends over the next day so I wanted to get ready for it, plus a glass of wine is not a bad idea on a relaxing Friday evening.

I proceeded to an empty cashier station and as soon as I placed the wine and the 6-pack on the counter to be scanned, the cashier lady asked:

“Miss, how old are you?”

I am usually not carded, but for some reason she thought I was around 21 years-old… nice! Maybe it was the jeans and t-shirt I was wearing. So I slowly answered:

“I am, uh…… twwwenty? ….. um… twenty-eight? Hmm… Yeah! Twenty-eight!"

I don’t know why, but my mind was in a total blank when the lady asked the question. I don’t know what happened to me; I must have been really tired. To answer, I had to remember by birth year and count the difference to come up with my age (yeah, call me a weirdo…). So the cashier lady became suspicious with my answer:

“May I have your ID, please?”

Thank goodness I had my ID.

What An Uncomfortable Thing To See...

So last weekend during my trip to Daytona, I stopped by an ice cream parlor. The place was actually a beautiful Spanish style restaurant with a lounge area on the second floor. While waiting for the ice cream, I looked around to see the beautiful antique furniture and all the memorabilia they had posted on the walls... like a lot of restaurants around the city. But I was really surprised and uncomfortable when I noticed that they were actually photos of 9-11.

What a depressing thing to see while having dinner, ice cream or just simply a glass of wine to uh... 'relax'.

The Solaire Lamp was designed by Pu Tai, a Taiwanese design student in London. When the lamp is turned on and off, the light slowly imitates the sun rising and setting among the London skyline. Cool, huh?

Poor Fish!

I saw these Flickr photos at NotCot.org a couple of days ago and it really took my attention. It's a fish bowl with a handle so you can take your aquatic pet friend wherever you go. Here's the designer's response to one of the readers:

"the idea started for a project that I made for kids that have divorced parents and two houses. The idea was to make for them a fun product that can help them to take their fish-friend from place to place".
Sad concept, isn't it? Nice looking fishbowl though, but now my question is... [drumroll please....]

Why?!.... Why would I carry a fish everywhere I go?

Interpol In Miami

I had a lot of fun at the Interpol concert last night at University of Miami's BankUnited! My friend and I obtained some good seats on the left side of the arena, very close to the stage.

Let me just start up by saying that Interpol’s opening band, Liars, was well uh… piercing. Their music was like a nuclear bomb of over processed percussion and a level of experimentalism that was absolutely exhausting. So repetitive, so restless and unsatisfying that probably a group of high school kids could have created music like this, or maybe better.

For an Indie rock band, if you have excellent instrumentation and lyrics, a perfect voice is not a requirement for a song to be wonderfully pleasing (look at fantastic Indie rock bands like The Rapture or Good Shoes for example). But Liars music, lyrics and voice delivery were average.

Me, my friend, as well as the couple next to us (and possibly most of the crowd), were anxiously waiting for the band to end. Now, let’s move onto better things...

Awesome show by Interpol! After only a few minutes, I realized that this wonderful NYC band really know how to put on a great show. The stage was set with a purple background combined with a great flow of multi-colored lights. I always thought that their signature suits and tie wardrobe would perhaps make the show too tense or formal, but I was actually surprised. It was a relaxing/fun concert, with a music that absorbed me in a very comforting way.
From what I remember, their opening song was “C’mere”: the perfect opening track for an Interpol show. Other highlights included “Rest My Chemistry” (their new album single), “Evil” and “Slow Hands”. They even played “Obstacle 1” as one of the encores: my favorite Interpol song.
Probably the coolest song though, was “PDA”, which it stopped for a few minutes exactly at the best part of the song. Right when the song continued, the band played their ass off.

The band played some songs from their new album, which received a good reaction from the crowd. However, every time they started playing one of their hits, the crowd reacted like they’ve been starving for music food for months. The guitars were playful, the drumming was powerful, the bass was excellent, the keyboarding added an exquisite taste and the vocals well… fantastic as always.

Let's just say I was very happy to have seen them live… it was long overdue!

Counterfeit Cars

It is incredible all the things that the Chinese can copy nowadays: from purses, to toys, to dvd's... you name it! Well, now they've been copying cars... yep, you read that right.

The Chinese are now manufacturing fake cars. I don't understand how they can do this since a car is made of thousands of parts , using expensive machinery, plus let's not even talk about the amount of professionals that get involved into creating a car. It's a mystery to me...

This odd snake 'house is actually a bus stop. No, seriously! Is a bus stop in Ventura, California. It was designed by Dennis Oppenheim and is fully operated... It would be uncomfortable for me to sit here while waiting for a bus...

Ignorance

The following video is a clip of the show 'The View' aired last Tuesday:

The lady in the middle is Sherri Shepherd, a new co-host for the show, as well as a person who's not sure if the world is flat or round... You must be joking...
Unlike Miss Carolina (read here), I don't think Mrs. Shepherd is stupid... besides, she's in The View for a reason, right? Maybe is just simple-mindedness or plain ignorance.
Mrs. Shepperd: I advice you to now and then pick up a book, go to the internet or read the newspaper at least. There's no excuse for ignorance in 2007.

"I don't know... I... I never thought about it"
Remember that one...

Unexpected Phone Call

Last Saturday night, I received a very unexpected phone call. It was about 10:30 pm and I was already sleeping. I needed to take an early flight on Sunday.
All of a sudden, my cell phone rings. It was a long distance phone call from Dominican Republic. Just to give you a fact, neither I have been to DR since 1997, nor I have family members or relatives living there. I was kinda the 'last of the Mohican's'... Actually, I take that back, I do have a cousin who still lives there but he visits the US very often, to the point that his children were born in NYC.
But anyhow, other than my cousin, nobody calls me from DR, therefore this was quite a surprise. I pick up the phone and it just so happened that it was my 10 year high school reunion on the phone!
Yep, last Saturday was the reunion and I didn't know. I only keep in touch with two friends from high school And I haven't spoken to them since New Year's... the rest, I haven't spoken to since I left the country, so you can imagine my happiness and melancholy when I heard more than a dozen of my old friends on the phone yelling my name at the same time.
It was one of the best moments of my life... I felt happy and sad... well, I don't even know how to explain it. It was just the most awesome phone call I've ever received.
I haven't been to DR in a long time and never had the urge of coming back.... but now I do... I can't wait to go back to visit.
Here are some pictures of my beautiful country...

House O

House O, designed by Turkish firm Erginoglu & Calislar, is located in Yalikavak: one of the most popular areas in Turkey. Constructed in 2005, the residence offers a modern/minimalist lifestyle while keeping the topography of the land. The building consists of three stone structures connected by two clear glass spaces, using light to transmit the feeling of one big open space. Interior design and proper furniture arrangement were used to distinguish each area of the house instead of walls.

False Advertisement

This flower dealer in LA has displayed a colorful sign advertising the business. The interesting thing is that the sign attempts to advertise a dozen roses for $4, but if you look closely, you can see a small '1/2 ' next to the word 'dozen'. And what about the small '99' next to the $4. What a rip off!
